CID Resumes Investigation into Sugar Tax Fraud Linked to Former President’s Secretaries and Major Importer
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has resumed its probe into the controversial sugar tax fraud.

Reports indicate that the Financial and Commercial Crime Division of the CID is in the process of obtaining the mobile and landline numbers of the former secretaries of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who was the President at the time the fraud occurred.

An audit conducted on the matter revealed that the government suffered a financial loss of 13.82 billion rupees as a result of the sugar tax fraud.

Sri Lanka produces only 9% of its domestic sugar requirements, with the remainder being imported. It has been reported that a major importer took significant advantage of the sugar tax manipulation, profiting 6.23 billion rupees from the scheme.
