A group of representatives from various voluntary organizations in Jaffna staged a protest yesterday (15) against the opening of a new liquor store in the Kankasanture area.
The protesters voiced concerns over the growing number of liquor outlets in Jaffna, stating that the excessive availability of alcohol could contribute to a rise in anti-social behavior. They emphasized that the area surrounding the new liquor store is home to several religious sites, including Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian places of worship, as well as three schools, making it an inappropriate location for such an establishment.
In addition to the protest, the demonstrators submitted a formal memorandum to local government authorities in Thelippalai, urging them to revoke the license for the liquor store and halt its opening at the current location.
