The Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate has ordered the release of copies of a confidential statement made by Viranjith Thambugala Chairman of ‘Aura Lanka,’ to the court. In his statement, Viranjith Thambugala alleged that certain high-ranking officials from the Secret Police extorted large sums of money from him and misappropriated his wealth. He claimed to possess audio and video evidence supporting his allegations.
The order was issued by Magistrate Manodi Hevawasam today (14), following a request made by Chief Inspector Sampath Rajakaruna of the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Illegal Assets Investigation Division, through a motion.
Viranjith Thambugala, represented by lawyer Upali Jayamanna, voluntarily provided this statement before the Additional Magistrate, Ms. Hevawasam, under Section 127 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The request for a copy of the statement was submitted by Chief Inspector Rajakaruna when the case was called, which the Magistrate accepted, thereby authorizing its release to the Secret Police.
