After former President Ranil Wickramasinghe assumed office, two special committees were appointed to investigate the Easter attacks. Despite the passage of time since the final reports were submitted, there is growing concern over the non-disclosure of these reports.
The first committee, established on September 11, 2023, following Wickramasinghe’s presidency, was tasked with investigating the revelations made by Channel Four regarding the Easter attacks. This committee was chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge S.I. Imam, with retired Air Force Commander Jayalath Weerakkodi and President’s Counsel Harsha A.J. Sosa serving as members. The final report from this committee was submitted to Wickramasinghe on June 25, 2024.
The second committee was appointed by Wickramasinghe to examine the alleged failure of intelligence agencies to prevent the attack, despite prior warnings. Chaired by retired judge A.N.J. Alvis, this committee began its work on June 12, 2024, and delivered its report on September 14, 2024.
However, serious concerns have emerged over the government’s decision not to release either report to the public. There is widespread speculation that these reports contain highly controversial findings, leading to growing calls for their immediate release to the public.
