The largest car assembly plant in South Asia, a Volkswagen factory, will be inaugurated today (17th) under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, according to Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Vice Leader of the United National Party and Senior Adviser to the President.

Kariyawasam made this announcement yesterday (16th) during a press conference held at his residence in Kuliyapitiya.

“After securing this project, we faced numerous baseless accusations. However, the Western Automobile Institute will not only be launched tomorrow, but it will also showcase a range of vehicles assembled at the plant,” he said.

Currently, the factory assembles 25 vehicles daily, including motor cars, vans, double cabs, and other brands. In the future, it is expected to produce four additional types of vehicles. The factory is projected to generate 1,000 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs. Additionally, a training school is being established to equip workers with the necessary skills for employment in the factory.

Those undergoing this training will receive certified qualifications, enabling them to pursue job opportunities abroad. The opening of this factory will allow not just the local community but the entire nation to fulfill their dream of owning vehicles without the burden of customs duties. Furthermore, the availability of spare parts for all assembled vehicles will be ensured at affordable prices,” Kariyawasam added.
