U.S. Issues Travel Advisory for Sri Lanka Ahead of Presidential Election, Citing Risks of Unrest and Terrorism

The U.S. Department of State has issued an updated travel advisory for Sri Lanka ahead of the presidential election scheduled for September 21, 2024. The advisory warns of heightened risks related to civil unrest and terrorism, urging U.S. citizens to exercise increased caution during this period.

According to the statement, the U.S. Department of State noted that, as the election approaches, the likelihood of protests and demonstrations is high, with the potential for such events to occur before, during, or after the election. “Historical patterns indicate that these gatherings can quickly turn violent, with authorities often using water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds,” the advisory emphasized.

The travel advisory also highlighted a persistent threat of terrorism in Sri Lanka, particularly in public spaces. “Past attacks have targeted popular tourist spots, transportation hubs, markets, shopping centers, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, and more. These incidents are unpredictable and can happen without warning,” it stated.

In addition, the U.S. Department of State provided specific recommendations for U.S. travelers in Sri Lanka:

  • Avoid Public Gatherings: U.S. citizens are strongly advised to steer clear of all public demonstrations, as even peaceful gatherings can escalate rapidly and pose serious risks.
  • Stay Informed: Travelers should stay updated through local news and heed instructions from local authorities.
  • Exercise Caution: Remain alert in public spaces and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

The advisory underscores the need for vigilance during this potentially volatile period.
