In response to the disciplinary action against Dr. Palitha Rajapaksa, the Coordinator and Deputy Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) in the Uva Province, for his public disclosure regarding the drug shortage at Badulla Hospital, the GMOA has threatened further action. Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, the union’s Press Secretary, stated that if health authorities do not reverse their decision, the GMOA will convene an emergency executive committee meeting next week to escalate professional measures.
He also highlighted that a one-hour protest campaign has already commenced at district hospitals across the province.
The GMOA has called for a revision of the investigation process, noting that the current investigation lacks officials with the necessary technical expertise to evaluate the case against Dr. Rajapaksa. Dr. Wijesinghe further condemned the practice of targeting and silencing union officials who bring attention to critical issues like the ongoing medicine shortages.
