The Forum of Women Members of Parliament has issued a statement strongly condemning the series of inhumane incidents of gang-raping a 16-year-old girl since 2023 in Tanamalvila area and the verbal and mental harassment of the victim by the relevant forensic officer as alleged by the victim’s mother. The statement issued condemning the incident signed by the President of the Women Parliamentarians Forum, Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, points out that the series of inhumane incidents that this girl had to face shows that all the responsible authorities in Sri Lanka have neglected their duty in relation to the incident.
Emphasizing the need to act with conscience, responsibility and accountability in such illegal incidents, the forum requests the Child and Women Abuse Prevention Bureau and the National Child Protection Authority to monitor all the parties involved in the incident and prepare the environment for the child to live without further harassment, and the entire process To manage and give her a remedy for a healthy social life with utmost care.
The Women MP Forum requests the Ministry of Education to take steps to train teachers across the country on how to handle such situations effectively and sensitively when they arise. The forum strongly points out that the dignity of the child is and should be given priority over the image of the schools.
The Forum of Women Members of Parliament further points out that such violations of women’s and children’s rights are absolutely unacceptable and should not be allowed to happen. This announcement further points out that the Forum of Women Members of Parliament will continue to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents and to protect the rights and dignity of every girl child in Sri Lanka.
