The Director General of Archeology said this when he participated in an observation tour of Wessagiriya as a “Heritage Park” on the 14th under the leadership of the Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Mr Vidura Wickramanayake.
The Vessagiriya sacred site is being conserved and the place is to be beautified as an information centre as well as to help the tourism industry.
Prof. Thusitha Mendis, who further commented, said:
“Sources have revealed that five hundred monks of the Vaishya caste lived here. During the excavations carried out here by the Jetawana project in 2006, many prehistoric information of the Mesolithic Balangoda people has been found. Among them, there is evidence that there were settlements here. We can imagine being located. It is taken back to the distant past around 3900 BC. Information has been revealed that the Pabbatharama built here in the 5th AD was during the Sigiri Kasyapa era, as well as the designs with drips from the 3rd century BC.
Inscriptions have shown that Vessagiriya is a part of Isurumuni itself, and Nashtavesha testifies to the facts necessary to accept it. Bodhi Ranmasu Uyana and Vandora are among them.
The entrance of Anuradhapurapuja City should be further preserved. No construction will be allowed in the entrance in the future. During the excavations, it has been possible to reveal that there were settlements forty feet below the entrance.”
