Mr. Dallas Alahapperuma raised a question in Parliament today regarding the fundamental rights petition filed before the Supreme Court. The petition seeks a ruling that holding the next presidential election would violate the Constitution unless approved by a referendum. The question was directed to the Minister of Justice, Mr. Wijedasa Rajapaksa.
In his response, Minister Rajapaksa provided a detailed explanation, stating that there is no issue since the Supreme Court has already ruled that the President’s term of office is five years. He added, using a colloquial expression, that after the term ends, everyone should take steps to leave office without being ‘humiliated’.
