Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa criticized past actions by supporters of the President and the government, claiming they had deemed it inappropriate to hold a presidential election due to unfavourable news.
He stated that numerous efforts are currently underway to undermine the constitutionally mandated presidential election, describing these actions as conspiracies to violate the constitution. He accused certain groups of attempting to cancel and disrupt the people’s right to elect a new president.
Premadasa made these remarks in a special statement in Batticaloa, protesting the government’s attempts to obstruct the presidential election. He emphasized the importance of preserving the people’s right to vote and urged responsible officials not to undermine the country’s democracy by delaying the election.
He called for the Election Commission and all relevant officials to take appropriate steps to ensure a free and fair democratic election, without fear or bias, for the country’s 22 million people. Premadasa added that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Samagi Jana Alliance are committed to safeguarding democracy and placing the people’s interests first.
