Suspension action was effected with the approval of the Director General (Director, Highway Operations Maintenance and Management Division) Deputy Director General Mr. P. H. Gunasinghe
Preliminary investigations revealed that the large-scale money fraud, which is said to have been carried out by taking advantage of the electricity crisis in the country in 2020, was done in a very cunning manner by disconnecting the electricity and then cutting the electric wires.
27 employees work at the Athurigiriya Interchange Center, out of which 22 have committed this fraud, it has been revealed during the investigation.
It has been revealed that the large-scale money fraud has been carried out for a while by charging money without issuing tickets to the customers who came to exit the Athurigiriya Interchange Center after the electricity was switched off and the security cameras were disabled.
By end of January 2024, it has been revealed that a fraud of nearly 20 lakh rupees was committed by deactivating the security cameras in a few days.
