Mr. G. L. Peiris said that giving an extension of service to the Attorney General has never happened in history, and it is an act against the Constitution. Sri Lanka Latest News
Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo today (10), Professor Peiris also pointed out these facts.
He pointed out that the Attorney General has a unique set of responsibilities to fulfil the justice of the law, and this is the first time since 1948 that an Attorney General’s service has been extended.
The said professor stated that the process of holding the presidential election will start in 34 days and the extension of the office of the Attorney General during an election period may hinder the conduct of a fair election and the public confidence in the office of the Attorney General may be destroyed due to this action of the President.
The MP pointed out that the government’s argument for the extension of the Attorney General’s service is that the Attorney General is needed to carry forward the investigations of the Easter attack, the Xpress Pearl incident and the IMF, but those arguments are baseless.
Mr. Peiris also said that due to the extension of the current Attorney General’s service, there will be an injustice to the officials who are expected to be appointed next, and the efficiency of the Attorney General’s Department may collapse.
