His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the archbishop, has accused the former government and the current government of continuing to try to suppress the truth of the Easter attack. Sri Lanka Latest News
His Holiness Cardinal Ranjith said this while joining the main program held at St. Anthony’s shrine in Kochchikade to mark the 5th anniversary of the Easter attack.
His Holiness Cardinal Ranjith further said, “Mr Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who was elected to the office of President, was primarily assigned to process the recommendations of the reports of the Parliamentary Select Committee and the Presidential Commission assured that a transparent investigation will be conducted on the Easter attack and justice will be done. The presidential commission report, the day after he was accepted as the president of the country, he called me on the phone and mentioned that he had difficulties in doing so, and because of going to implement those recommendations, he went to arrest the leaders of certain organizations that were friendly to him and had to ban their organizations. I remember mentioning that it cannot be implemented.”
“It is really regrettable that he has taken steps to disrupt these investigations and conduct them the way he wants, by removing some of the officers who led the investigations from their positions and even putting one of their chiefs in jail, and by removing other officers from those positions and transferring them to distant areas, appointing only officers who are friendly to him for that purpose. There is a strong doubt about one thing. This means that the government and the current government are continuing to suppress the truth and are working to protect certain people and institutions involved in this. Although a group of extremist Muslim terrorists were indeed behind this attack, despite the evidence that there were other forces behind them, we can only conclude that the current government also wants to hide the truth about this attack in the absence of a proper investigation and in deliberately suppressing the evidence. Unreachable. Although there are recommendations to the Attorney General to enforce the law against the officers of the political and security sectors who did not prevent this attack when they were aware of it, we strongly condemn his silence until now. It is not because we Catholic people do not love our country that this is being brought to the international stage. Because we have no other option to find out the truth about this great destruction that happened to us.”
