Alarming Threat Looms Over Sri Lanka’s Children: A Closer Look at the Impending Danger Unfolding in Our Nation I Sri Lanka Latest News

We always hold our alma mater in high regard, regardless of our social standing or achievements, out of deep affection for the nurturing institution. A child’s life is profoundly enriched by the experience of attending school, creating a unique reverence for these formative years. Nobody wishes to witness the decline and destruction of the very school that played a pivotal role in shaping their future.

Regrettably, we recently became aware of a tragic event in the Galle area concerning Kamburuhena Panjawasa Primary School, situated in the Mapalagama village of Nagoda Divisional Secretariat, 36 kilometers from Galle. Nearly two years have passed since the closure of this small school, once a repository of wisdom for countless students. The unfortunate cause of its shutdown is the pervasive poverty among the villagers, leading parents to prioritize sending their children to work rather than to school.

Survey reports underscore the prevalence of such dire circumstances across various provinces of the island, particularly during a period of economic and social decline. It is disheartening that children of school age are being deprived of their right to education, compelled instead to engage in labor. Kamburuhena Pannawasa Primary School, which once boasted modern facilities, water amenities, and sanitation services, now remains closed due to an insufficient student population.

Local residents bemoan the neglect of the once-costly infrastructure, now surrendered to the encroaching wilderness. Moreover, the buildings have become a breeding ground for anti-social activities and drug addicts, posing a threat to the children of the village. Concerned citizens urge authorities to address and remedy this situation promptly to prevent further deterioration.

Amidst these pleas, a local resident suggests repurposing the deteriorating buildings for essential government functions, such as providing accommodation for ‘Grama Niladaries’ and agriculture officers. This proposal aims to salvage these valuable structures from decay and prevent their transformation into hubs for nefarious activities.

Former students who have achieved prominent positions in society express profound sadness upon learning about the current plight of their alma mater. Their heartfelt sentiments highlight the urgency of revitalizing the school or repurposing the location for public benefit. One former student notes the decay of the school, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent illegal activities within its premises.

A concerned mother in the village emphasizes the disastrous consequences if children become addicted to drugs due to the lack of educational opportunities. She implores authorities to intervene promptly, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Despite the heartfelt expressions of grief from villagers, it remains unclear which authorities bear responsibility for the plight of Kamburuhena Pannawasa Primary School. The lack of attention from entities such as the Ministry of Education, the Minister of Education, Provincial Education Offices, or other relevant institutions exacerbates the challenges faced by this struggling school.

While major cities like Colombo, Galle, and Kandy boast well-equipped schools, the stark reality for children in challenging areas presents a significant obstacle to accessing quality education. The closure of small schools like Kamburuhena Pannawasa Primary School raises questions about the fate of students who once studied there and underscores the need for accountability.

Parents in impoverished circumstances find it exceedingly difficult to allocate funds for their children’s education, with the meager earnings often insufficient to meet basic needs. This disparity between the burden of everyday life and the apparent enjoyment of those in positions of power has persisted for seventy years, casting a shadow on the future of countless children.

Education is a fundamental right for every child, and it is a tragedy when external challenges impede access to this right. It becomes the solemn responsibility of authorities to devise solutions to this educational crisis. Failure to fulfill this duty may lead to the disappearance of countless schools like Kamburuhena Pannawasa Primary School, further jeopardizing the future of the nation’s children. The plea is clear: unless proactive measures are taken, the optimism for a brighter future for these children will remain elusive.
