President Ranil Wickremesinghe informed the Cabinet of Ministers this evening that steps have been taken to increase the salaries of government employees through the 2024 Budget, sources told Ada Derana.

The President has further said that a request will be made for the private sector to also follow suit.

The President expressed these views at the Cabinet meeting chaired by him today (30) at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.

The president has also mentioned that he will request an increase in the salaries of the private sector in comparison to the increase in the salaries of the government employees.

The President has further mentioned that it is the policy of the incumbent government to raise the wages of the working people in a background where the prices of goods are increasing day by day.

He had further said before the Cabinet that knowing that the government is working to increase the salaries of government employees, certain groups including Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are trying to claim that it happened due to their influence.
