Acting Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Ruwan Gunasekara says that investigations can be carried out under the charge of robbery when vehicles are forcibly taken away by persons led by leasing companies when premium payments are delayed.Sri Lanka Latest News

Commenting on the matter, Mr. Ruwan Gunasekara further said that if there are vehicles with unpaid premiums, the leasing companies should inform the Police Station Commander of the concerned area and take necessary measures.

“If a company intends to acquire a vehicle, they can inform the Police Station Commander of that area. Several police officers are provided by the police station commander. Those police officers are given to maintain peace if there is any breach of peace in the process. A few months ago in the city of Kandy, a certain driver was caught by some people who were taking possession of the vehicle, assaulted him and took a key suspected to be the car key and then took the vehicle away. We had to conduct investigations against those people under the crime of robbery.”

However, in a press conference held yesterday (06), the Leasing and Loan Installment Payers’ Association alleged that leasing companies still charge installments unfairly and take away their vehicles by force when installment payments are delayed.
