A special discussion was held yesterday in Colombo with a group of ambassadors representing 12 countries and a group of delegations including opposition party leaders. It was chaired by opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa. Sri Lanka Latest News
Special attention was paid to many special issues and the current situation of Sri Lanka was discussed at length.
Matters such as consolidating Sri Lanka’s democracy, protecting the constitution and holding local government elections were also discussed.
Attention was also paid to the blatant corruption of democracy by the government, the inefficiency of the government to the problems faced by the people, the non-implementation of the anti-corruption process and many problems that have arisen in the field of legislation.
For this, United States Ambassador Mrs. Julie J Chung, Netherlands Ambassador Mrs. Bonnie Horbach, Indian High Commissioner Mr. Gopal Baglay, New Zealand High Commissioner Mr. Michael Appleton, Australian High Commissioner Mr. Paul Wesley Stephens, French High Commissioner Jean Francois Pactet, Canadian High Commissioner Eric Walsh, United Kingdom Acting Deputy High Commissioner Lisa Whanstall, Romanian Ambassador Victor Chiujdea, Pana Deputy Head of Mission Katsuki Kotaro, Italian Deputy Head of Mission Dr. Francesco Perale, Anne Vaugier Chatterjee of the EU Political Department participated.
Representing the opposition, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, addressed the ambassadors and high commissioners and briefed them on the many problems the country was facing.
The Leader of the Opposition particularly brought to the attention of the ambassadors about the serious threat to democracy through the deliberate postponement of elections.
The leader of the opposition informed about the failure of programs like Aswasuma due to insensitivity to the problems of the people and recalled how the country’s health sector has broken down and how the people are suffering due to inferior medicines.
In addition to this, the opposition leader said that even though many bills have been passed to fight corruption, the corruption scams have not ended yet and no proper way has been prepared to recover the money stolen from the country.
Also, the people present were informed that there are many problems in the field of legislation and all the bills have errors and due to this the quality of the legal system has decreased.
