According to a new gazette notification issued by the government, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, National Executive Committee member of the National People’s Movement, says that a very conspiratorial political intervention is being carried out for expired municipalities, city councils and local councils. He says that the government is ready to destroy the democratic right of the people by not holding the local government election which was scheduled to be held on March 9, 2023, which has been postponed indefinitely. “One of the fundamental rights of the people is the right to vote. The government is trampling on that right in a very shameless manner. We know that the local government election, which was scheduled to be held on March 9th, where nominations were being called and ballot papers were being printed, has been postponed due to various reasons. This postponement has been done even though a court order has been issued for that. People are continuously struggling on the streets demanding the legal right to vote.
The Ranil Rajapaksa government knows the level of public dislike and public opposition. Therefore, now with this emergency gazette announcement, the government is trying to maintain its henchmen. This gazette notice states that ‘in the event that local government bodies have announced to hold an election, due to a crisis situation in the country, it is not possible to hold the relevant election as announced. 10 (2) above (b) As per the directive, the term extended by the Minister had exceeded 12 months, but the relevant scattered assembly should be able to be reconvened for another period decided by the Minister.
This means that by now, the local government bodies that have expired legally and have been abolished, will be filled again with old minions. Maintain them. Roll democracy.
This is undemocratic. dangerous Destructive. JR is about to come. A Jayawardene-style work arrangement. We do not allow this. We are taking all possible actions against this shameless and naked attempt of the government. First of all we will go to court against this very soon. The democratic rights of the people will be won,” says Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
