US state department’s comprehensive country report on Sri Lanka released: Many avenues of HR violations highlighted in detail
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The US state department’s report on Sri Lana addresses many human rights violations that take place in Sri Lanka, including unlawful arrests, disappearances, torture and other cruel inhuman degrading punishment, prison and other detention conditions deterioration, denial of fair public trial, and a variety of other human rights violations committed by the state. Sri Lanka has been accused of human rights violations for many years, and this has been the main charge leveled against successive governments over the last two decades. It has been increasing year after year, with many trade embargoes and threats to take the rulers to the international court among the major threats levied against the rulers.

It is also significant that many UNHRC votes have been cast against Sri Lanka, with different mitigation conditions imposed on the government each time, none of which have been fully implemented. The controversial PTA law, which was used to suppress political opponents and anti-government protests, has raised international concern about repealing this draconian law.
