Public Security Minister Tiran Alas has decided not to appear before the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission tomorrow (13).

Minister Tiran Alas said that he will take steps to inform the Human Rights Commission about it in writing.

Minister Tiran Alas has decided not to appear before the commission as the relevant call has not been made under a proper system.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka had started an investigation into the manner in which the police and security forces acted to control the protests around the universities of Colombo and Kelaniya.

The Human Rights Commission announced that the Minister of Public Security, Mr. Tiran Alas, has been informed to appear before the Commission tomorrow to explain the measures taken by the police officers to quell the protests.

However, the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has issued a press release today regarding the relevant investigations.

It states that the commission has received several complaints regarding alleged violation of fundamental rights by the police in their attempt to prevent demonstrations around the Colombo and Kelaniya universities on March 7 and 8.

Accordingly, the Human Rights Commission has started investigations into the complaints and the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has full authority to summon any person before the commission for the investigations, it is stated in the relevant announcement.

Therefore, it is further stated in the announcement issued by the Human Rights Commission that the Minister in charge of Police has been requested to come to the Commission and provide some explanation regarding the relevant incident.
