Ranil Wickramasingha won the parliamentary election with 134 votes, followed by Mr. Dullas Allahapperuma with 82 votes and Anura Kumara Dissanayaka with three votes.
Addressing the legislature, the new President reiterated his desire for the support of all parties involved, and he invited the other two candidates and the opposition leader to join forces with him and assist him in steering the country toward development.
The irony of the outcome is that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinga is the only member of parliament elected from the national list from his party.
