Asia Cup 2023 set to be canceled as BCCI plans for five-nation tournament after rejecting PCB’s hybrid model – Reports

The Asia Cup 2023 was set to be hosted by Pakistan, but BCCI has confirmed that Indian team will not travel there.

The hosting of the Asia Cup has been a heavily discussed topic in recent weeks, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remaining firm in their positions.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly rejected the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) hybrid model for the Asia Cup 2023 hosting and instead is planning to host a five-nation tournament instead to prepare for the ODI world Cup 2023.

With Pakistan scheduled to host the Asia Cup in September 2023, it had proposed a hybrid model to ACC where the Indian team would play their matches outside of Pakistan, while the rest of the teams played in Pakistan.

However, the BCCI has reportedly rejected the model as PCB is remaining firm on the plan of the same and wanted the Asia Cup to be completely moved out of the country.

The idea of holding the event in another country has been entirely rejected by the PCB, as Sri Lanka also reportedly wanted to host the event, with the UAE being a potential candidate as well. The PCB’s rejection of every other alternative other than hosting the tournament at home came as the board opined that if the issue was not resolved now, then it could cause issues when they host the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

BCCI plans its own five-nation tournament in the Asia Cup window to prep for World Cup

Meanwhile, with the prospect of the Asia Cup 2023 of not taking place, the BCCI has reportedly been planning for a brand new five-nation tournament that could take place in the window, which will be vacated by the Asia Cup, in case it is canceled.

According to sources, a big decision regarding the Asia Cup can be expected in a few days. If the Asia Cup does not take place this year, it may also affect Pakistan’s preparations for the 2023 World Cup in India.
