The Minister of State for Technology, Kanaka Herath, recently announced that the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has granted initial approval for ‘Starlink’ to provide satellite-based internet services in Sri Lanka.
On Tuesday, Parliament approved amendments to a decades-old law, paving the way for Elon Musk’s Starlink to operate in the country. The updated Telecommunications Bill, which marks the first revision in 28 years, was passed without a vote.
These amendments introduce three new types of licenses, officially allowing Starlink to enter Sri Lanka’s telecom market as a licensed provider. However, high-level government sources indicated that the service would not be launched before the upcoming presidential election.
Additionally, reports suggest that Elon Musk was expected to visit Sri Lanka on the 15th of this month. However, the visit is now believed to be postponed until Starlink’s operations are underway.
