Tamil National Alliance (TNA) President, Mr. Mavai Senathirajah, has declined an invitation extended by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to join him on stage during a rally in Jaffna.
President Wickremesinghe, currently visiting Jaffna, had reportedly invited Mr. Senathirajah to appear on stage with him. After Mr. Senathirajah refused the invitation, the President personally visited his residence for a discussion.
Despite this meeting, President Wickremesinghe later claimed publicly that Mr. Senathirajah’s support was behind him, suggesting that the Tamil National Alliance was divided as a result.
However, Mr. Senathirajah, responding to these claims, firmly denied any such support for the President, reiterating his allegiance to opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa, in line with the party’s decision. He clarified that his courtesy towards President Wickremesinghe during the visit was simply an act of hospitality and did not indicate political backing.
Mr. Senathirajah emphasized that his support remains with Mr. Premadasa, and any suggestion of a split within the TNA is unfounded. He also addressed a government-led narrative that he opposed the TNA’s decision to back the opposition leader, branding it as completely false. The TNA leader reaffirmed his support for Mr. Premadasa and his commitment to the party’s collective stance.
