Hesha Withana, a member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, has announced his intention to introduce a private member’s motion aimed at curbing the privileges enjoyed by members of parliament. He stated that this initiative would be tabled when the new parliament convenes, emphasizing that the proposal seeks to promote a culture of accountability and support for the new president and the National People’s Power movement.
Explaining his stance, Withana remarked:
“We do not support many of the privileges granted to MPs. For instance, we propose the complete discontinuation of the breakfast and lunch provided to members of parliament. If necessary, MPs can bring their meals from home. Similarly, the Rs. 10 million loans offered at low interest rates should be abolished.
We recommend ending the security provided to all MPs and cabinet ministers. If official residences in Colombo are allocated to ministers, they should be rented out, with the proceeds directed to the Mahapola Fund. The Rs. 100,000 allowance for maintaining offices is also unnecessary.
The basic salary of an MP, which stands at Rs. 54,285, should suffice for those willing to serve as a public duty rather than a privilege. We must also eliminate vehicle allowances, convert Madiwela MP housing into hostels for university students, and discontinue the insurance cover worth Rs. 1 million.
Furthermore, I propose the abolition of the MP pension scheme and the termination of any elite benefits. We must act urgently, as the allocation of housing forms is set to begin after the 21st of this month. Any reforms will become increasingly difficult to implement after that point. It’s time to lead by example and initiate these changes immediately.”
Withana’s proposal has sparked significant public interest, with many citizens lauding the move as a step towards fostering greater equality and reducing excessive perks in politics.
