Former Kandy District MP and former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has announced his temporary retirement from active politics.
He made this announcement during a meeting held yesterday (13) in Kandy, where he briefed party members on his political journey.
Rambukwella clarified that he is not leaving politics as a “political orphan.” Despite stepping back, he asserted that public support for him remains unwavering. He emphasized that the affection he earned from the people through his political career is far more valuable to him than the wealth he accumulated as a businessman.
Expressing confidence in the legal system, Rambukwella stated that he firmly believes justice will be served in his favor and that he hopes to return to politics with a clear conscience.
“About 31 years ago, I accidentally entered politics. My grandfather was a member of Mr. Bandaranaike’s senate, and it was Mr. Bandaranaike who called me ‘Keheliya.’ I never had any intention of getting involved in politics—I was a successful businessman.”
He added, “Whether I am in politics or not, I am always available to help. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time. This isn’t just a hollow statement, it’s something I say from the heart.”
Throughout his political career, Keheliya Rambukwella has held several key ministerial positions, including Minister of Mass Media, Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, Minister of Water Supply and Drainage, Minister of Health, and Minister of Environment.
