The Supreme Court has granted leave to proceed with an appeal seeking a determination that Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala is not qualified to hold office as a Member of Parliament.
The order was issued after the Supreme Court considered an appeal petition filed by former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Renuka Perera.
In the petition, the appellant seeks a ruling that Mr. Wijepala, having assumed the position of Chief of Staff to the President after being elected to Parliament, is disqualified from serving as a Member of Parliament under the provisions of the Constitution.
Accordingly, the petition requests the court to determine that Mr. Wijepala is ineligible to continue holding office as a Member of Parliament.
