A high-level discussion between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and officials from the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development took place today (14) at the Presidential Secretariat.
The meeting focused on the effective management, integration, and development of the manufacturing sector, along with addressing key challenges to enhance the national economy.
Key topics of discussion included the government’s initial investments to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), proper regulatory measures, and the establishment of local small-scale industries within investment zones. The challenges faced by SMEs, particularly concerning business loans, were also deliberated at length.
President Dissanayake instructed officials to expedite the release of lands allocated to the Ministry of Industries that have yet to be made available for use.
Further discussions were held on maintaining and auditing import restrictions to strengthen local industries. The President also emphasized the need to prioritize local suppliers in procurement processes related to the construction industry. Issues within the gem and jewelry sector and the importance of ensuring its full economic contribution to the national economy were also addressed.
Additionally, the President directed officials to promptly implement the tax exemption granted to tourists as a measure to encourage growth in the gem and jewelry industry.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti, Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Thilaka Jayasundara, and a group of senior ministry officials.
