Although macroeconomic indicators such as economic growth rates and statistical data are frequently discussed, it is equally important to examine how these factors impact the micro economy, particularly individuals and households, the Opposition Leader said.
He stated that he wishes to know how the current economic growth rate is affecting the country’s micro-level economy. The Opposition Leader further pointed out that although Sri Lanka has received various bilateral and multilateral assistance following Cyclone Ditva, funds from existing foreign aid programmes have been reused for relief efforts.
In other words, he explained that money allocated for projects currently being implemented in the country has been redirected to provide relief for Cyclone Ditva. In this context, he emphasized that the government’s attention should be focused on requesting new financial assistance from relevant institutions, rather than reallocating funds already committed. He stressed that discussions should be held with institutions capable of providing fresh financial resources.
Additionally, the Opposition Leader noted that micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises have collapsed under the current economic conditions. As a result, he stated that affected individuals are planning to file legal cases against commercial banks today.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa made these remarks in Parliament today.
