A group of lawyers protested in front of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court this afternoon (18).
This is based on the situation that Additional Magistrate Tharanga Mahawatta had to face yesterday (17).
When the case against student activist Mr. Wasantha Mudalige and Reverend Galvewa Siridhamma Thera was heard under the Prevention of Terrorism Act yesterday (17), Senior Deputy Solicitor General, Mr. Dilipa Peiris, the Additional Magistrate, based on the affidavits of four officers of the Terrorist Investigation Unit, decided that the case should be heard by the Additional Magistrate. He declared that he was not.
Steps were taken yesterday (17) to transfer the case to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and today (18) the lawyers who gathered in front of the Magistrate’s Court protested against the allegations leveled against the Additional Magistrate and the group also engaged in a walk to Keselwatta intersection
