Finance Minister of Japan , Mr. Sunichi Suzuki has stated that no discussions have been held with Sri Lanka regarding the restructuring of Sri Lanka’s debt.

He has stated this while making a statement to Reuters.

However, at the beginning of this month, Reuters reported that Japan is ready to hold a summit regarding Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring. Reuters news agency reported the same news saying that unnamed sources have stated this.

However, it is a special event that the Japanese Finance Minister, giving a statement to Reuters today, has stated that although other discussions have been held with Sri Lanka, no discussions have been held regarding the holding of a debt restructuring summit.

However Reuters in their news report without mentioned this and instead said ” Tokyo is open to hosting talks among all the creditor nations aimed at lifting Colombo from its worst debt crisis since independence, but it is not clear whether top creditor China would join and a lack of clarity remains about Sri Lanka’s finances, one source told Reuters.”

Contradicting what Reuters said, the Financial Post, quoting the Japanese foreign minister, reported thus: “Earlier on Tuesday, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said his country was not in talks with Sri Lanka to hold such a meeting.”
“We are having various interactions with the Sri Lanka side, but no preparation is going on with Sri Lanka for holding such talks,” Hayashi told a regular news conference”.
