The Irrigation Department has instructed the Road Development Authority to immediately halt the unauthorized carpeting of the embankment of Basavakkulama Lake, also known as ‘Abaya’ Lake, which is considered the oldest lake in Sri Lankan history.

A prominent politician from Anuradhapura has initiated work under a government project to carpet 1,500 kilometres of roads nationwide. However, the Irrigation Department has intervened to stop the work on the lake’s embankment, which is currently under construction.

Anuradhapura Irrigation Director Mr Jayantha de Silva reported that the work was halted as soon as he learned it was being carried out without permission. He also noted the presence of stones in the area.

Prof. Thusitha Mendis, Director General of Archeology, clarified that an archaeology officer does not have the authority to grant such permission for road development projects.
