The government has suddenly proposed that the committee on parliamentary affairs meet today (17th) and tomorrow (18th) to appoint a ‘select committee’ to investigate the conduct of the election commission and its members on the country’s election program. The opposition leader said that the purpose of this action is to influence the newly appointed Election Commission and the trials before the court to implement the government’s agenda instead of implementing the democratic agenda. Sri Lanka Latest News

Opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said this in a special statement today (17).

The opposition leader said that tomorrow in the parliament, a selection committee on the local government election process of the election commission will be appointed to give a clear indication that the current election commission should work within the limits of the government’s agendas and if not, have to present  to a parliamentary selection committee.

Also, if the honorable judges do not act according to the views of the government, if the court decisions are not implemented, then the honorable judges can be brought before a selection committee and put under pressure. The opposition leader further said that the selection committee will continue to implement the outdate system that everyone is talking about.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition said that the government is going to put pressure on the judiciary and the Independent Election Commission under the theme of violation of the privileges of the members. It is not the privileges of the Pohottu Members of Parliament that have been violated, but the privileges and rights of 220 lakh people.

Through this, we will not allow the independence of the judiciary to be lost and we will not allow the Independent and Impartial Election Commission to be influenced and we will work together with all the opposition parties for the upliftment of the 220 lakh people and for the independence of the judiciary and the independence of the Election Commission and for the strengthening of democracy and to prevent destroying democracy. Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, added that he will work to defeat all these insidious attempts by the government.
