The Secretary of the Railway Drivers’ Association, Chandana Wiyanduwa, announced that all freight trains and fuel transport trains will be withdrawn from service from midnight today.
He stated that this decision comes in response to the increasing number of incidents where wild elephants collide with trains operating during night hours. According to him, despite repeated reports and appeals, no adequate solution has been provided to address this ongoing safety concern.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo this morning, he said that the association was compelled to take this step due to the failure to resolve the issue.
