The election commission has stalled a politically motivated ‘jayapirith’ chanting ceremony organized by the patronage of a leading temple in Colombo courtesy of some ministry to be held in Independence Square today (14) to promote a prominent candidate’s presidential campaign. Sri Lanka Latest News
The Election Commission has taken this action following a complaint that it was preparing to conduct a Jaya Pirith sermon at Freedom Square to seek blessings for a candidate who has deposited security money to contest the presidential election.
The officials of the Election Commission, who immediately came into action, met the leaders of a major temple in Colombo where they received information about the organization of Piritha and went to several government institutions that spend money on Piritha and met with their officials to inform them about this.
Thus, an official of the Election Commission told ‘Divaina’ that the Pirit Desumu will not be held today.
He said that more than 360 violations of election laws have been reported so far and the committee formed by the commission will act immediately and take necessary measures. – The island
