Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith Warns Against Inappropriate Sex Education in School Reforms

The Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, has expressed serious concern that a program is being implemented to mislead children by introducing what he termed “inappropriate sex education” into Sri Lanka’s school curriculum. (Sri Lanka Latest News)

He stated that the initiative is planned to be rolled out through educational reforms scheduled to commence in January next year, allegedly under pressure from international organizations.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith made these remarks while attending the opening ceremony of the renovated St. Stephen’s Church in Keenadeniya, Mirigama.

Further elaborating, he said:

“A new course is now being developed to provide sex education to young children starting from the sixth grade. Class teachers are going to be prepared for this, and conferences are going to be held. Is this education? What is this? Don’t parents have that responsibility? Teach children about such things when they need it. Educate parents on how to teach certain matters to children as they grow older.

Among these plans, they are going to create awareness especially about homosexual relationships and birth control. Behind all of this are international organizations attempting to destroy our country. Among them in particular is the United Nations Family Planning Association. They are providing funds to the government and the Ministry of Education, printing the necessary materials, and a program is now underway in Sri Lanka to mislead these children.

From the twenty-seventh of next January, these lessons will be taught in our schools starting from the sixth grade. Isn’t this an attempt to destroy our children? In this degraded Western world, where there is no religion or dharma, their values are being brought to our country. Therefore, we must say clearly—do not teach these immoral things to our children.

If the Ministry of State Education is leading these innocent children down such a wrong path, we must strongly condemn it. How can a moral government allow such things? We cannot permit our culture and civilization to be destroyed in this country. I do not know whether our President is aware of these matters, but I request him as well—please do not allow ministry officials to carry out such programs as they wish.”
