SLGJA signs MOC with University of Sri Jayewardenepura to help empower Gem and Jewellery Industry I Sri Lanka Latest Business News

A significant stride towards revitalizing Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry was taken as the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura joined hands through a momentous Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) signing ceremony. This transformative event unfolded within the distinguished premises of the University’s Senate Boardroom on the 23rd of August 2023.

This project was initiated by Mr. Pinisiri Wijepala, Vice President, Lapidary Segment of the SLGJA, and his team with the objective of uplifting the Lapidary Segment to international standards and marks the introduction modern technology with the Gem and Jewellery industry.

Mr. Ajward Deen, President of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association, Senior Members of the SLGA and Members of the Lapidary Segment were present for the signing at the event. Other Distinguished dignitaries graced the occasion with their presence and insights, including Dr. Thilaksiri Bandara, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr. Dulani Mudunkotuwa, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Mr. Pinsiri Wijepala, Vice President, Lapidary Segment of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Thilaksiri Bandara, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, expressed, “It is an honour to stand before you on this auspicious occasion. We extend our gratitude to all esteemed attendees, especially Mr. Ajward Deen, President of the SLGJA. This collaboration between the University and SLGJA presents a remarkable opportunity for synergistic efforts to bolster the economy, fostering increased foreign exchange inflow.”

Continuing this discourse, Dr. Dulani Mudunkotuwa, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, shared her perspective during the event, stating, “Engineers hold a pivotal role in enhancing various industries across our nation. This collaboration offers us a splendid chance to collaborate closely with the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association, contributing to their commendable endeavour to rejuvenate the economic landscape. We eagerly anticipate a fruitful partnership for years to come.”

Mr. Pinsiri Wijepala, Vice President, Lapidary Segment of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association, addressed the gathering. He commented, “The global significance of the Gem and Jewellery industry cannot be understated. It is our collective responsibility to bolster our local industry, ensuring its prosperity aligns with international standards. The formal agreement between the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association marks an encouraging first step towards an elevated industry trajectory.”

Following these illuminating speeches, the ceremonial signing of the MOC brought together representatives from the University of Jayewardenepura and the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association. The event was then concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Saman Amarasena, Board Member of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association and Member of the Lapidary Segment.
