Seylan Developments Celebrates World Children’s Day 2025 with Water Purification Project in Welioya

Seylan Developments PLC has continued its commitment to community welfare with a significant initiative, providing safe drinking water to the MU/Ethawetunuwewa Vidyalaya in Welioya, Mullaitivu District, a region identified as high-risk for kidney disease due to unsafe water sources.

The school, serving 358 students, 22 teachers, and a community of 450 families, previously had no access to purified water. Students were forced to bring water from home, placing an unnecessary burden on them and their families. With the principal’s support, Seylan Developments funded and executed the installation of a complete water purification system.

The project involved drilling a 100 – 125-foot tube well, installing a submersible pump, laying pipelines to a 2,000-litre raw water storage tank, connecting the system to a reverse osmosis (RO) purification unit, and supplying a permanent 1,000-litre purified water storage tank. Following successful testing, the school and community now enjoy reliable access to safe drinking water.

Anuja Ratnaayake, CEO of Seylan Developments PLC, said, “This project reflects our deep commitment to community welfare, especially in regions where health risks are heightened due to unsafe water sources. This  World Children’s Day, we wanted to emphasise that every child deserves access to clean water and a safe learning environment. Our CSR programmes aim to address these fundamental needs and contribute to the long-term wellbeing of the nation’s younger generation.”

This initiative builds on the company’s earlier projects, including the 2023 water purification plant at Padaviya Mahasen Primary School and the 2024 project at MU/Ahetugaswewa Welioya School, supporting hundreds of students and their families.

The handover ceremony of the MU/Ethawetunuwewa Vidyalaya project took place on World Children’s Day 2025, in the presence of Directors Tilan Wijeyesekera and Najill Farouk, and Seylan Developments team members, marking another milestone in the company’s journey of delivering sustainable and impactful CSR initiatives.
