Observed annually on the first Sunday of June, World Breakfast Day is a UNESCO-designated occasion that celebrates the universal importance of breakfast — the meal that unites families, communities, and cultures across the globe.
At the heart of this global celebration is a spotlight on the rich culinary heritage of Turkish breakfast. From bustling bazaars in Istanbul to family tables around the world, Turkish breakfasts are renowned for their variety, warmth, and social spirit. Signature dishes such as menemen (scrambled eggs with vegetables and cheese), simit (sesame-encrusted bread rings), su böreği (cheese-filled pastry), and sucuklu yumurta (eggs with Turkish sausage) showcase the diversity and depth of this beloved morning tradition.
UNESCO’s recognition of World Breakfast Day not only underscores the health and social value of starting the day with a meaningful meal, but also promotes cross-cultural appreciation — with Turkish diplomatic missions worldwide organizing special events to share the experience.
In 2025, the Turkish Embassy in Colombo will join the global festivities by hosting a celebratory breakfast event, inviting guests to discover the flavors and cultural richness of Türkiye through its most cherished meal of the day.
World Breakfast Day reminds us that breakfast is more than just food — it’s a shared moment that connects people, traditions, and nations.
