Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasooriya left for Qatar yesterday afternoon (14) to convey the condolences of the Government and people of Sri Lanka following the passing of the former Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
During the visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to officially convey the condolences of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan people to the family of the late former Emir and the people of the State of Qatar.
The visit is also expected to further strengthen the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and the State of Qatar.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with members of the late Emir’s family as well as senior diplomats of the State of Qatar during the visit.
Several opposition Members of Parliament have also travelled to Doha on the same flight to attend the funeral.
Airport sources said that all of them departed from Katunayake for Doha on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-217 at 6:50 p.m. yesterday.
