Six Tamil-Speaking Parties Urge Sri Lanka Government to Hold Provincial Council Elections Without Delay

Six Tamil-speaking political parties have jointly urged the government to conduct the Provincial Council elections without further delay.

The request was made during a media briefing held in Colombo today (13), following a discussion among representatives of the six political parties.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the All Ceylon People’s Congress (ACMC), Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC), Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA), Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), and Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA).

Former Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran stated that although the National People’s Power (NPP) government had pledged to hold the Provincial Council elections within one year of assuming office, no meaningful progress has been made to date.

He further said that the six parties had reached a consensus on four key areas: enacting a new Constitution, holding the Provincial Council elections, addressing land-related issues affecting all communities, and resolving minority issues through dialogue.

Former MP Sumanthiran also noted that the parties had reaffirmed their commitment to continue discussions through a common platform aimed at promoting reconciliation, strengthening democratic governance, and safeguarding the rights of all communities in Sri Lanka.
