Police report that 25 people, including prison officials, have lost their lives in a clash that broke out this morning (06) at the Negombo Prison.
It is further reported that nearly 100 individuals have been injured as a result of the incident.
Negombo Hospital stated that both the deceased and some of the injured bore gunshot wounds on their bodies.
The clash erupted this morning when a group of inmates carried out organised attacks, leading security forces to open fire in an attempt to bring the situation under control.
This morning’s incident occurred against the backdrop of unrest within the prison yesterday (05), which had been brought under control by midnight.
