Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa stated that he could become the President of Sri Lanka in 2029, emphasizing that he possesses the necessary qualifications for the position. However, he noted that the final decision rests with the people.
Speaking further, Weerawansa said that if he is elected President, he would withdraw Sri Lanka from its agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and seek membership in the BRICS bloc, which includes countries such as Russia, China, and India. He added that economic challenges facing the country could be addressed with the support and cooperation of those nations.
Responding to a question raised by a journalist, Weerawansa stated that Sri Lanka’s next President should not be a leader who follows the path pursued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Instead, he said the country requires a leader capable of adopting an alternative political and economic direction.
