The Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) today arrested the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Welikada Police over allegations that he demanded a bribe of Rs. 300,000 to release the passports of 19 Chinese nationals who were among the 120 Chinese nationals arrested at a high-rise apartment complex on Welikada Middle Road for allegedly engaging in cybercrime activities.
A team of officers from the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) travelled to the Veyangoda area and arrested the suspect, who was serving as the OIC of the Welikada Police.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has launched an investigation into the failure to produce in court the mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices found in the possession of the arrested Chinese nationals.
