The Election Commission has stated that it is prepared to conduct the Provincial Council elections at any time under the legal provisions passed by Parliament based on the recommendations of the Parliamentary Select Committee. Sri Lanka Latest News
The Attorney General’s Department has also submitted information to the Committee outlining the existing legal obstacles and explaining how the Provincial Council elections could be conducted by addressing and removing those impediments.
The Parliamentary Select Committee, which was appointed to examine and report on the electoral system under which the Provincial Council elections should be held, and to present its proposals and recommendations in this regard, had sought input from both the Attorney General’s Department and members of the Election Commission.
This discussion took place when the Special Committee met in Parliament recently under the chairmanship of its Chairman, Minister Vijitha Herath.
During the meeting, the Election Commission made the above statement.
Deputy Ministers Arun Hemachandra, Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala, Munir Mulafar, and Members of Parliament Mano Ganesan, Shanakkian Rajaputhiram Rasamanikkam, Dharmapriya Wijesinghe, Samanmali Gunasinghe, Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi, and President’s Counsel M. Nizam Kariyapper were also present at the meeting.
