The Department of Meteorology says that the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist and is expected to move away from the island within the next 36 hours.

According to the department, some areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Northwestern provinces may experience very heavy rainfall of around 150 mm today (15).

Skies are expected to remain cloudy across most parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northwestern, and Northern provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura, Galle, and Matara districts.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm may occur in some areas of the Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces after 1.00 p.m.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risks associated with temporary strong winds and lightning that may accompany thundershowers.
