Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha has emphasized that the need to establish a land bridge between India and Sri Lanka is urgent, stating that the time for further hesitation is over.

He pointed out that although the distance between Rameswaram and Talaimannar is only around 30 km, it is a significant anomaly that there is no direct road, railway connection, properly functioning ferry service, or power grid linkage between the two countries. He further stated that the establishment of such connectivity would completely transform the economic geography of both countries and would provide a major boost for Sri Lanka’s ambition to become a regional hub.
The High Commissioner also recalled that India is currently Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner, the leading source of tourists, and a major contributor of foreign direct investment. He noted that Indian investments accounted for more than 50% of total investments in Sri Lanka last year, and that Indian companies have made significant investments in sectors including telecommunications, energy, digitalization, financial services, and infrastructure.
