The Criminal Investigation Department has launched an investigation into the shooting death of underworld gang leader Makandure Madush, who was killed by two unidentified gunmen while in the custody of the Colombo Crimes Division.
According to police, the Criminal Investigation Department will record statements from the officers who escorted Madush to the Maligawatte area on the day of the incident.
On October 20, 2020, Makandure Madush was shot dead by two unknown gunmen in the Maligawatte area while he was in police custody.
At the time, officers attached to the Colombo Crimes Division had taken Madush to the location to recover a stock of drugs based on information provided by him.
Meanwhile, a brother of Makandure Madush had submitted a request to the Ministry of Public Security, calling for an investigation into the killing.
Following the request, the Sri Lanka Police stated that the Inspector General of Police had referred the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Police further stated that after reporting the matter to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, the court issued an order to obtain a statement from the medical officer and to collect video footage of the shooting from media institutions.
