The Supreme Court has directed the lawyers representing the petitioners to take steps to issue notices to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and other individuals named as respondents in the Fundamental Rights Petition. The petition seeks an order to recover compensation paid to former MPs and Ministers who allegedly received payments illegally for damages caused to their houses during the violent incidents that erupted across the country following the May 9, 2022, unrest.
In line with the Court’s order, notices are to be sent to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa; former Defense Secretary and retired Army Major General Kamal Gunaratne; former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne; former Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne; former Public Security Ministers Prasanna Ranatunga and Tiran Alles; and former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Jagath Alwis.
